«It was exactly seven years ago. I went out from the security entrance of Colony Number 16. I finished shooting for the day, and in this place in general. At the end of passage, at the corner of a concrete fence, an old woman stood leaning on two sticks. I tried to pass slowly. A recently paroled prisoner who was walking behind me, went ahead, leaned over to her and said: “I’ve seen he has already received his documents. He’s coming out soon.”

I was waiting in the distance, trampling on the February snow. This village called Forest Abagur. There are concrete perimeters separating the two colonies, and a small street of wooden log homes for the employees of these colonies. That’s the whole landscape, under the gray sky of the Siberian winter. It’s the perfect illustration of the maxim that describes the relationship between Russian prisoners and their guards,

“We are all doing time, but just spending the night on opposite sides of barbed wire.”

He was standing next to his to his grandmother, and repeated over and over again, amazed, and looking at the beauty of concrete fences, half a dozen cottages, old snow, and the low gray sky: “So that’s what is it -freedom! ” He was smiling confusedly and crying»
