How was Chernigov seen by the German invaders? How did the city look after the bombing two weeks earlier?
Temples, buildings and streets, German military equipment and lines of prisoners of war – more than 40 unique photographs from a private collection will be presented for the first time at a single exhibition at the ChernigivPhotoFest.

ENG

Wesley Wong (Hong Kong)

In the center of the photograph, the Victoria Harbor glistens under the sun. Star Ferries pass by. Skyscrapers across the harbor cover the mountains. An overhang on Queen’s Pier casts a shadow on six spectators, creating a silhouette of their bodies. Relatively in their old age, they rest on a metal rail along the edge of the pier. After few decades, most of the old structures in Hong Kong are to be demolished along with so much of its historical value. I feel a sense of nostalgia as they look out onto the harbor one last time.

I found this photograph about a year after it was taken and I was able to feel the exact same feeling as those I felt behind the camera. At that moment, I realized the power of a photograph; how it can capture emotions, capture time. I began looking at several photography books of old Hong Kong, and saw many other photographers were able to document the water shortage of 1963, Shek Kip Mei Public Estate fire in 1953, and most beautifully, a Hong Kong without skyscrapers. Inspired with by Henri Cartier Bresson’s quote “We photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing, and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth can make them come back again. We cannot develop and print a memory”. I too wanted to document history so that those in the future could see today’s world.

Photography is the only way I can express my inner thoughts. The camera acts as my third eye, a mechanical eye that is intuitive and impulsive. Photography is the way I shout.

RU

Her remarkably evocative pictures use a mixture of abstraction and representation to create an enigmatic depth and height suggesting a reality beyond that of the things actually shown.

—–

Alina Kisina’s photographic series City of Home might, at first glance, seem merely aimed at capturing the daily life of her hometown of Kiev, Ukraine. Yet Kisina’s strangely evocative photographs are concerned less with documentary impressions than with opening up realms above and beyond the mundane images that define the surface of her work. For the subway steps, skylines, facades, and factory lots that Kisina depicts resonate with an order that seems not of this world. Her pictures—often quite literally—reflect realms that seem to be existing side-by-side with or beyond the mere material givens of her everyday subject matter. Although superficially static, her serene, perfectly composed photographs actively lead us into higher realms that are uplifting and light: they cause us to transcend the materiality of everyday existence and enter into planes of experience heretofore unknown

The profundities and oddities of Vivian Maier’s life and work have been a great inspiration for those of us who have come to know her through her photographs. One of the most difficult challenges that an artist faces involves how to accommodate life’s basic needs while finding the time and means for the pursuit of making art. The brilliance of Maier’s problem-solving abilities comes to light through her choice of occupation. Working as a nanny allowed her to solve not only life’s hierarchy of needs: food, clothing and shelter; it also provided a foundation for her to fulfill her personal need to take photographs.

Vivian Maier’s way of life speaks to what all artists and individuals strive to achieve in one form or another: coming to terms with their personal sense of beauty through pursuit of one’s own purpose.Like many great artists, Vivian Maier did just this. However, in her case, she did so without the support of family, friends or fellow artists. Through her own isolated efforts, Maier found her life’s mission in photography, documenting her own sense of beauty (sometimes raw) in the images of people, places and things around her.

Maier incessantly prowled the city and suburban streets with her camera, day and night, locally and worldwide, in all types of weather (sometimes extreme). It certainly appears that her approach to art-making followed a “one-tenth inspiration, nine-tenths perspiration” recipe. Additionally, it seems appropriate that her choice of residency was Chicago, a city known for its no-nonsense, “big shoulders” work ethic. The melding of her work drive with an environment that rewards hard work helped Vivian Maier become the exceptional photographer that she is now posthumously recognized to be.

Through both her life and her images, Maier affords us an experience of elevation, a sense of what the human spirit can achieve through art. Her private determination has resulted in an abundant collection of contagiously inspirational photographs. Across gender, race, age, and occupation, she has inspired not only professional and amateur photographers, but painters, sculptors, designers, musicians, writers, and art lovers in general, among many others who have communicated their thoughts to us. Vivian Maier lives on as an inspiration for both present and future generations. As said by a 13-year-old aspiring photographer and admirer of Maier’s work, “I feel like I’m standing right along side of her…”
